RAWALPINDI: The district administration of Rawalpindi is set to launch the first phase of its electric bus service next week, with Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz expected to inaugurate the eco-friendly transport system. A total of 80 buses will operate across 10 routes, with 45 buses ready for deployment in the initial phase.
Temporary charging facilities have been established at the old General Transport Service (GTS) bus stand on Adamjee Road, Saddar, while two more charging stations on Peshawar Road are expected to be completed by the end of December. Staff recruitment and driver training have been completed, and routes have been finalised, with minor adjustments due to ongoing construction at Kutchery Chowk.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Hassan Waqar Cheema said the new bus service will cover 86 kilometres, connecting key city points including the airport, railway station, metro bus stations, and general bus stand. The initiative aims to provide a modern, sustainable transport system while reducing pollution in the garrison city.
The administration has planned a depot on 28 kanals of land on Peshawar Road to park the buses, which will operate on routes connecting major city hubs such as Railway Station to Lahore High Court, Koral Chowk to Fawara Chowk, and Umar Baig Chowk to Mandi Mor. The remaining buses will be deployed in subsequent phases once infrastructure is completed.
