
The Senate approved major amendment bills for the armed forces and the Supreme Court on Friday. Lawmakers passed the bills through clause-by-clause voting in the Upper House. The move followed swift approval by the federal cabinet and the National Assembly a day earlier.
The Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy Amendment Bills of 2025 were passed alongside the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill. These bills were approved without being sent to standing committees for further review. Their rapid passage signaled strong government resolve to align laws with recent constitutional changes.

The government stated that all amendments were designed to match the newly enacted 27th Constitutional Amendment. The updated framework establishes the Federal Constitutional Court under Article 175B. The changes also aim to ensure consistency between military laws and the new constitutional structure.
Opposition lawmakers from the PTI remained absent during the session. Meanwhile, JUI-F members staged loud protests against the bills. Despite this, the treasury benches maintained a clear majority and pushed the legislation through without delay.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar said the amendments help integrate the 27th Amendment with existing laws. He noted that the Chief of Defence Forces will now serve a five-year tenure. This change resets the tenure of COAS Field Marshal Asim Munir once he assumes the role of CDF. Tarar added that related adjustments were also made within the Air Force and Navy Acts.
