Neelum valley experiences first winter snow amid reconstruction challenges

Published on: November 12, 2025 4:29 PM

Neelum Valley in Azad Kashmir has received the season’s first rainfall and snowfall, bringing sharply colder temperatures across the scenic region. The Meteorological Department has warned that higher altitudes can expect further rain and snow over the coming week, creating a true winter atmosphere for both residents and visitors. The early snowfall has enhanced the valley’s natural beauty, drawing tourists eager to witness its picturesque winter landscapes.

Despite the tourist appeal, locals continue to face hardships due to incomplete rehabilitation after the devastating August 14 cloudburst in Nallah Jagran. Critical infrastructure, including link bridges and access roads connecting Kundal Shahi Waterfall, Kutton Jagran, and surrounding areas, remains damaged, causing daily disruptions for over 25,000 residents. The slow pace of reconstruction has left many communities struggling with limited access to essential services and transportation challenges.

Authorities have been urged by villagers to expedite restoration projects, especially the rebuilding of key bridges and roads, before harsher winter conditions exacerbate difficulties. Many residents fear that continued delays will further isolate affected areas and hinder emergency response during extreme weather events. The early snowfall has highlighted the urgency for swift government action to protect vulnerable communities and maintain connectivity.

Tourists, meanwhile, have started arriving in the valley to enjoy its winter charm, with snow-capped peaks and frosted landscapes offering breathtaking views. Local businesses are preparing for a possible surge in visitors, although limited infrastructure and accessibility issues remain a concern. Community leaders hope that increased attention on winter tourism will also encourage faster rehabilitation of critical facilities.

The Meteorological Department advised visitors and residents to exercise caution, as icy roads and limited access in higher-altitude areas could pose safety risks. Authorities continue to monitor weather conditions and urge travelers to plan accordingly while prioritizing safety. Meanwhile, locals remain optimistic that reconstruction efforts will accelerate to ensure that essential infrastructure is restored before the coldest months arrive.

Neelum Valley’s first snowfall signals the beginning of winter, offering both natural beauty and challenges for the region. The combination of tourism opportunities and infrastructure needs highlights the importance of timely government action to balance safety, accessibility, and economic benefits for the valley’s communities.
