Senior lawyers, retired judges urge CJP Afridi to convene full court meeting on 27th Amendment
ISLAMABAD – A group of senior lawyers and retired judges have written a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), calling for a full court meeting to deliberate on the controversial 27th Constitutional Amendment.

The letter, signed by Justice (r) Mushir Alam, Makhdoom Ali Khan, Munir A Malik, Abid Zuberi, Justice (r) Nadeem Akhtar, Akram Sheikh, Anwar Mansoor, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Khawaja Ahmad Hussain, and Salahuddin Ahmad, emphasized that the Supreme Court must assert its authority and provide a clear response to the proposed amendment.

“We are writing under extraordinary circumstances,” the letter stated. “The Supreme Court is facing the greatest threat since its inception. No civilian or military government has ever succeeded in making the Court its subordinate. If you agree that this is the first such attempt, then it is the Supreme Court’s right to respond.”

The signatories urged the Chief Justice to safeguard judicial independence and uphold the Constitution amid what they described as an unprecedented challenge to the Court’s autonomy.

Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced that his party would not vote in favour of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. According to party sources, the JUI-F leader departed Karachi for Dubai and will travel onward to Bangladesh to attend the International Khatm-e-Nabuwwat (PBUH) Conference, where religious scholars and spiritual leaders from across the world are gathering.
