RIO DE JANEIRO – London Mayor Sadiq Khan praised Zohran Mamdani’s victory in the New York City mayoral race, calling it “a fantastic win” and congratulating New Yorkers for choosing “hope over fear.” Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist, campaigned on policies including higher taxes on corporations and the wealthy to fund free city buses, childcare, and rent freezes, becoming the first Muslim mayor of the largest U.S. city.
Khan noted parallels between his own election experience in London and Mamdani’s win, highlighting the challenges both faced from national leaders opposed to them. He emphasized that Mamdani’s religion was secondary to his ability to connect with voters on policy and vision. “In the face of adversity, you can really bring a city together,” Khan said.

The London Mayor, speaking ahead of the COP30 environmental meeting in Brazil, drew comparisons between New York and London as liberal, multicultural, and progressive cities, positioning them in contrast to the values espoused by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Khan advised mayors not to be intimidated by national leaders, particularly those who act as bullies.
Khan also reflected on his own record as mayor, noting his focus on environmental policy, affordable housing, and public transport, while acknowledging criticism over crime rates during his tenure.
