Pakistan-Germany friendship strengthened: Maryam Nawaz

LAHORE – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said Pakistan and Germany share common values of peace, development, and human dignity. She made the remarks while meeting German parliamentarian Derya Türk-Nachbaur in Lahore. The meeting focused on bilateral relations, women’s empowerment, education, youth programs, environmental protection, and clean energy initiatives. Maryam Nawaz warmly welcomed her guest and thanked Germany for supporting Pakistan during recent floods.

The Chief Minister praised the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES) for 100 years of service, including 35 years in Pakistan. She highlighted the foundation’s work in democracy, social justice, and dialogue between Pakistan and Germany. Maryam Nawaz emphasized that both countries value democracy, tolerance, and parliamentary governance, which form the foundation for peace and progress. She also commended Derya Türk-Nachbaur for advocating inclusive policymaking, gender equality, and human rights.

Maryam Nawaz proposed FES hold training workshops for lawmakers, youth, and women parliamentarians under its democratic governance program. She added that exchanges between Punjab and German parliaments could strengthen local autonomy and federal cooperation. The Chief Minister also highlighted Germany’s role as a reliable development partner since 1951, noting contributions in environment, vocational training, energy, health, and women’s economic participation.

The Chief Minister expressed interest in adopting Germany’s dual vocational training model to improve youth employment skills. She welcomed increased German investment in renewable energy, agriculture technology, IT, and clean manufacturing. Maryam Nawaz also stressed education reforms, including curriculum modernization, digital learning, and international research collaboration. She highlighted that over 10,000 Pakistani students currently study in German universities, strengthening academic and cultural ties.

Women’s empowerment remained central to the discussion, with initiatives such as the E-Bike Scheme, Honahar Scholarship, and Women Inclusive Program. Maryam Nawaz underlined that Punjab’s cultural landmarks, including Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, and Shalimar Gardens, symbolize shared heritage. She reaffirmed her commitment to deepening Pakistan-Germany friendship through parliamentary engagement, sustainable development, and mutual cooperation.
