LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced decisive measures against land grabbing, declaring that “no one will now snatch anyone’s land in Punjab,” as the state will protect every citizen’s property rights like a mother safeguards her children.
Chairing a high-level meeting, Maryam Nawaz approved the Punjab Protection of Ownership of Immovable Property Ordinance 2025, aimed at permanently eliminating the encroachment mafia operating across the province. She emphasized that every property owner has the right to secure and lawful possession of their land, calling property “a universe for a common man” that must not be taken away by powerful groups.

Under the new ordinance, Dispute Resolution Committees (DRCs) will be established in every district to resolve property possession cases within 90 days, ensuring swift justice without lengthy court battles. Appeals against DRC decisions will be heard by a special tribunal headed by a retired High Court judge, who will also be required to deliver a verdict within 90 days.
Authorities briefed the meeting that the DRCs, led by Deputy Commissioners and including police officials and local representatives, will be empowered to recover land from encroachers within 24 hours of a ruling. The committees are expected to become functional within 30 days.

The government also reviewed proposals to employ the PERA force for land recovery and to introduce digital records and live social media streaming to ensure transparency in proceedings. Maryam Nawaz reaffirmed that the initiative reflects her government’s commitment to providing speedy justice and protecting citizens from land mafias that have long exploited loopholes in the system.
