Putin did not threaten Pakistan, Russia confirms after viral video

Published on: October 30, 2025 4:24 PM

The Russian Embassy in Pakistan has confirmed that a viral video allegedly showing President Vladimir Putin threatening Pakistan is “100% fake.” The clip, shared widely on social media, was found to be dubbed and unrelated to Pakistan or Afghanistan. The original footage actually shows Putin answering questions at a Russian Geographical Society event on October 23, 2025.

The embassy emphasized that Putin did not mention Pakistan or Afghanistan in his comments. It also reiterated Russia’s position that Pak-Afghan disputes should be resolved through diplomacy and dialogue. Moscow supports political solutions and encourages constructive engagement between Pakistan and Afghanistan on counterterrorism and regional security issues.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have risen sharply after border skirmishes in early October. On October 11, a cross-border attack originating from Afghanistan targeted Pakistan. The Taliban accused Pakistan of airstrikes in Afghan territory, further escalating hostilities. A ceasefire brokered in Doha on October 19 temporarily paused fighting, but a second round of talks in Istanbul failed to yield results.

Pakistan has agreed to resume negotiations in Istanbul at the request of host countries, aiming to restore trust and peace. The core issue remains Pakistan’s demand that Afghanistan prevent its territory from being used by anti-Pakistan terrorist groups. Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar criticized the Afghan delegation for blame-shifting and delaying tactics during talks.

Tarar stated that Pakistan always negotiates in good faith but condemned the Taliban government for aiding anti-Pakistan terrorists. He accused Kabul of failing to honor the Doha Agreement and warned that Pakistan will take every step to protect its citizens. The situation underscores ongoing instability along the Pak-Afghan border and highlights the need for credible diplomacy.
