Pakistan raised strong concerns over the Basmati trade issue and ethanol exports during talks with the European Parliament’s Development Committee. Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan urged the EU to restore duty concessions on ethanol and resolve delays in the Geographical Indication (GI) registration for Basmati rice. He said both matters directly affect millions of farmers who depend on these exports for their livelihoods.
The meeting included senior EU members from Austria, Spain, Germany, Poland, and Czechia. Jam Kamal stressed that removing ethanol concessions under the GSP+ scheme had badly hurt Pakistan’s rural economy. He added that the EU must recognize Pakistan’s historic claim to Basmati rice and ensure a fair, transparent decision. The minister emphasized that agriculture remains a lifeline for Pakistan’s economy, especially after recent devastating floods.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening EU relations through sustainable trade and mutual cooperation. Jam Kamal highlighted Pakistan’s progress under the GSP+ framework, linking it to growth, human rights, and social reforms. He also cited Pakistan’s recent election to the UN Human Rights Council for 2026–2028 as proof of global trust in the country’s positive direction.
The minister noted several domestic reforms, including the Islamabad Child Marriage Restraint Act 2025 and the establishment of new commissions for human rights, journalists’ safety, and minorities. He said these reforms reflect Pakistan’s vision of tolerance, inclusion, and accountability. The EU delegation welcomed these steps and acknowledged Pakistan’s progress toward democratic and social development.

In a separate session, the EU team met Senator Sherry Rehman to discuss climate and trade cooperation. She stressed the need for joint efforts to face global challenges like climate change and displacement. As the Basmati trade issue continues, Pakistan hopes for fair EU decisions that protect its exports, farmers, and long-standing agricultural identity.
