US President Donald Trump has ruled out running as vice president in the 2028 elections, dismissing the idea as “a trick” and saying it would not be fair to the American people.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said that while some supporters had floated the idea to extend his political career, he would not pursue it. “I think it would be clever, yes, but it’s a trick. People wouldn’t like it. It wouldn’t be right,” he said.

The speculation followed growing talk among Trump loyalists about finding constitutional loopholes to allow him a third term. Some suggested he could run as vice president under another candidate, who would later resign to let Trump return to office. However, legal experts argue the US Constitution’s 22nd Amendment strictly limits presidents to two elected terms.
Trump, now in his second term, has often hinted at wanting to stay longer in office. “I’d love to do it,” he said with a smile when asked about a third term. He also referenced the “Trump 2028” caps reportedly distributed inside the White House, which fueled further speculation.

The president also praised Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, calling them “outstanding people” and suggesting they would make an “unbeatable team” in future elections. “If they ever teamed up, no one could stop them,” Trump added, leaving open the possibility of supporting his close allies for 2028.
