PCB hands Shan Masood key role as director of international cricket

Published on: October 24, 2025 9:02 PM

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed national Test captain Shan Masood as the new Director of International Cricket Operations, replacing senior administrator Usman Wahla. The announcement was made by PCB Chairman Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi during a dinner reception held in Islamabad on Friday, attended by players, officials, and former cricketers.

According to PCB sources, the decision reflects the board’s new approach of bringing experienced cricketers into management to bridge the gap between the playing squad and administration. Masood, who currently leads Pakistan’s red-ball team, will now handle international scheduling, team logistics, and coordination with foreign boards, in addition to his captaincy duties.

Usman Wahla was earlier removed from the post following internal reviews that cited delays in decision-making during the Asia Cup 2023. The PCB later advertised the role, requiring candidates to have international cricket experience. Wahla, who has previously overseen major ICC and bilateral events, is expected to be reassigned to a key position within the Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Chairman Naqvi, while confirming the appointment, praised Masood for his professionalism and leadership qualities, saying his “strategic mindset and international exposure will benefit Pakistan cricket both on and off the field.” Insiders say the board believes this move will create stronger coordination between the team management and the cricket operations department.

The appointment of Shan Masood marks a significant shift in the PCB’s administrative vision, emphasizing the inclusion of active or recently active cricketers in executive roles. The move also aligns with Naqvi’s ongoing reforms aimed at professionalizing the board’s structure, enhancing transparency, and ensuring that cricketing decisions are led by those who understand the modern game firsthand.
