Punjab reports 70% drop in major crimes, launches weapon-free initiative

Published on: October 24, 2025 8:15 PM

Punjab Police has reported a sharp drop in crime across the province. The Crime Control Department (CCD) played a key role in this achievement. Major crimes, including murder and vehicle theft, fell by up to 70 percent. Authorities credited police modernization and focused operations for the decline. Public confidence in law enforcement has improved noticeably.

Inspector General Dr. Usman Anwar said the murder rate fell from 1,300 to 800 cases per month. Vehicle snatching declined by 62 percent. CCD Additional IG Sohail Zafar Chattha emphasized a “zero-tolerance policy” toward serious crimes like robbery, rape, and murder. He added nearly 500 fewer people die each month compared to last year.

The Punjab government launched a 15-day amnesty for citizens to surrender illegal weapons. Chattha warned that strict action will follow the deadline. Licensed weapons will also be verified, and illegal licenses revoked. Officials aim to reduce gun crime by 75 percent over the next four months.

Chief Minister’s reforms have strengthened the police system and border security. A modern drone surveillance system now helps monitor borders and respond quickly. Police recruitment is strictly merit-based, with no political interference. Funding for check posts and modernization has further improved law enforcement efficiency.

The CCD continues to target organized criminal networks and regulate private security companies. Officials plan to maintain operations across Punjab to dismantle mafias and ensure safety. Chattha stressed the goal is a safer, stronger, and crime-free Punjab for all citizens.
