The Punjab Transport Department has intensified its crackdown on smoke-emitting and unfit vehicles across the province. The campaign aims to reduce rising smog levels before winter. Officials have been directed to operate around the clock and take strict action against violators. Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said no leniency would be shown to anyone breaking environmental rules. He urged citizens to maintain their vehicles properly to support the fight against pollution.
According to the department’s latest report, more than 90,000 vehicles were inspected at Vehicle Inspection and Certification System stations in Lahore this year. Around 55,000 of them met fitness standards and received official certificates. Meanwhile, 8,000 smoke-emitting vehicles were fined, and 5,500 were taken off the roads. Additionally, 3,500 vehicles without valid fitness certificates were seized by authorities. These measures aim to keep only roadworthy vehicles in operation.

Moreover, the department imposed fines of Rs85 million on violators during the ongoing campaign. Over 14,000 vehicles were penalized for overloading, while 2,200 cases were registered for repeated violations. Around 1,800 vehicle owners and drivers were also detained for breaking environmental laws. These strict steps reflect the government’s commitment to protecting air quality and public health.
The minister reaffirmed that the crackdown would continue in all districts without any exemptions. He warned that vehicles emitting smoke or lacking fitness certificates would face immediate action. He also reminded transporters and owners to take preventive measures and cooperate with inspection teams. Regular maintenance, he said, is vital to keeping the environment clean and ensuring safe transportation.
