ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Interior will brief the federal cabinet today (Thursday) regarding the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) amid growing calls for a ban on the group following recent violent protests.
According to official sources, the Punjab government’s recommendations will also be presented before the cabinet. The provincial authorities have already urged the federal government to impose a ban on TLP under Article 17 of the Constitution.

A summary seeking the ban is likely to be approved during the cabinet session. If approved, a reference will be filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, which will take the final decision on the party’s legal status.
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari confirmed that the provincial cabinet has already endorsed the ban, adding that the summary has been forwarded to the federal government for final approval. “During TLP’s so-called ‘peaceful protests’, 202 police personnel were seriously injured, and 97 police vehicles were completely destroyed,” Bukhari said.

She clarified that the move is not directed against any religious group or sect but against extremist elements responsible for violence and destruction. “No action has been taken against any religious organization, mosque, or madrassa. The measures are strictly aimed at curbing those spreading chaos and extremism in the name of religion,” she added.
If approved, this would mark one of the most significant federal actions against a religious-political group in recent years, reflecting the government’s growing concern over violent street movements.
