DUBAI — Dubai Police have unveiled a cutting-edge biometric tunnel that can identify people by their walk and body movements in about five seconds, officials said. The system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse a person’s “motion fingerprint” — the unique way they move — including arm swing, foot pattern and overall walking balance.
Police say the tunnel can identify someone even if they hide their face or change their appearance through plastic surgery, because a person’s gait is difficult to disguise. The technology records a short sequence of body movements and then matches it to a digital identity profile.

According to Dubai Police, the system is currently in the research and development stage. They expect that, in future, this method could replace traditional identity parades and be used widely to identify suspects quickly and reliably.
Officials describe the tunnel as fast and non-intrusive: it captures motion data and returns a match within about five seconds. While police highlight its potential to improve security and speed up investigations, the introduction of such surveillance technology may also raise questions about privacy and safeguards — issues that experts often say should be addressed alongside deployment.
For now, Dubai Police are testing the system and studying how it can be used safely and effectively in public safety operations.
