BELFAST – Northern Ireland breathed new life into their World Cup qualification campaign with a well-earned 2–0 victory over Slovakia at Windsor Park on Friday night, moving into second place in Group A.
Slovakia came into the game brimming with confidence after a stunning 2–0 win over Germany and a 1–0 victory in Luxembourg, but their momentum was quickly halted by a dominant Northern Ireland side. The breakthrough came in the 18th minute, when Ethan Galbraith’s dangerous low cross forced Patrik Hrosovsky to turn the ball into his own net. The home side’s aggressive pressing and sharp passing ensured the advantage was fully deserved. Slovakia struggled to create meaningful chances, and Northern Ireland sealed the result in the 81st minute through Trai Hume’s first international goal.

After the Slovak keeper punched clear a cross, Hume met the rebound with a side-footed volley that sailed into the net, igniting celebrations across Windsor Park. “The keeper has come to clear it, and I just had to guide it towards the goal and thankfully I did,” Hume told BBC Northern Ireland. “It was a great night, good performance and the most important thing is the three points. I think we deserved it.”
With the win, Northern Ireland moved level on six points with Germany and Slovakia, trailing the Germans only on goal difference after their 4–0 win over Luxembourg. The result sets up a mouth-watering clash between Northern Ireland and Germany in Belfast on Monday, a fixture that could define both teams’ qualification hopes.
