Islamabad-Rawalpindi lockdown as protest blocks roads, internet cut

Published on: October 10, 2025 3:45 PM

Islamabad and Rawalpindi authorities have imposed strict security measures ahead of a religious group’s planned protest march towards Islamabad. To maintain order, officials blocked key entry routes to both cities, causing major traffic disruptions. Containers have been placed on roads, and several access points remain completely closed, frustrating commuters and residents. The government also ordered suspension of mobile internet services in the twin cities to prevent unrest.

Authorities shut down all connecting roads leading to Murree Road and blocked routes from Faizabad to Rawalpindi Saddar. Major thoroughfares between Islamabad and Rawalpindi are also sealed off. Heavy police deployments guard spots like Faizabad, Sixth Road, Chandni Chowk, and Liaquat Bagh, significantly reducing public transport availability. Metro bus services in both cities have been suspended, adding to travel woes. Businesses, hotels, and some commercial centers near Murree Road remain closed as part of the security clampdown.

The road closures have created severe difficulties for patients trying to reach hospitals. Police remind citizens that under Section 144, protests are banned in Rawalpindi, and any violation will result in immediate action. Educational institutions in Rawalpindi and Lahore have declared holidays. Punjab University postponed the LLB exams scheduled for today, with new dates to be announced later.

In a security-driven move, the Ministry of Interior instructed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to suspend 3G and 4G mobile internet services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The suspension started at midnight and will continue until further notice. The decision aims to curb communication that could escalate violence during the protest. Relevant officials, including Islamabad’s Commissioner, IG Police, and Rawalpindi’s RPO, have been informed to ensure smooth enforcement.

Overall, authorities are taking comprehensive steps to control the situation ahead of the protest. They emphasize maintaining public safety while managing disruptions to daily life. Citizens are urged to stay alert and cooperate with law enforcement during this tense period.
