Pakistani film wins global nature documentary award

Published on: October 5, 2025 5:09 PM

Pakistan has achieved a proud milestone in global cinema as Moklani — The Last Mohanas won the prestigious Jackson Wild Media Awards, often celebrated as the “Oscars of nature documentaries.” The achievement marks the first time a Pakistani film has claimed this honor, standing out among over 500 international entries.

Directed and produced by Jawad Sharif, the film sheds light on the Mohana community of Manchar Lake, an indigenous fishing people whose centuries-old culture and traditions are disappearing under modern and environmental pressures. Their story has now reached global recognition through this award.

The filmmakers dedicated the award to the Mohana fisherfolk, Pakistan, and indigenous communities worldwide. They emphasized that the film is not just a documentary but a tribute to resilience, culture, and wisdom that must not be forgotten.

Produced with the support of the National Geographic Society and Climate Kahani, Moklani – The Last Mohanas blends breathtaking visuals with powerful storytelling. It captures the fragile balance between human survival and environmental change, showing how local struggles mirror the global climate crisis.

Moreover, the film’s success underlines the growing role of Pakistani cinema in telling impactful stories on international platforms. By highlighting cultural extinction and climate threats, it positions Pakistan at the center of critical global conversations on heritage and sustainability.
