Palestinians struggle in Gaza as peace deal looms

Published on: October 1, 2025 3:15 PM

Displaced Palestinians in central Gaza were seen living in makeshift roadside tents and along the coastline on Wednesday, highlighting the dire humanitarian situation as peace talks gained renewed urgency. Families forced from their homes continue to endure unsafe and harsh living conditions, with little access to basic necessities, while regional and international powers push for a resolution to the ongoing conflict. The latest developments come a day after US President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Hamas over a newly proposed peace plan.

Trump gave Hamas three to four days to accept the US-backed proposal, warning of “a very sad end” if the group rejected the deal, which he described as close to ending the two-year war. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared alongside Trump in Washington earlier this week, fully endorsing the 20-point plan and declaring that it fulfilled Israel’s war aims. The announcement has sparked both hope and uncertainty in a region exhausted by years of violence and destruction.

The proposed deal, drafted with the involvement of mediators Qatar and Egypt, was formally presented to Hamas late on Monday. However, Hamas was not directly included in the negotiations that shaped the agreement, which demands the group’s disarmament, a condition it has consistently opposed. Despite this, officials briefed on the discussions indicated that Hamas would review the proposal “in good faith” and eventually provide a formal response, leaving the outcome in delicate balance.

At the same time, Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey have collectively urged Hamas to respond positively, emphasizing that the proposal could open a path to ending the devastating conflict in Gaza. Regional actors are increasingly pressuring Hamas to demonstrate flexibility, while international observers caution that failure to engage with the deal could lead to further escalation. The diplomatic push reflects growing urgency, as the humanitarian toll inside Gaza worsens daily.

The war began with the October 7, 2023, attack, in which Hamas-led fighters killed around 1,200 people in Israel and took 251 hostages, according to Israeli figures. Since then, Gaza’s health authorities report that more than 66,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli military operations. With civilians now sheltering in fragile tents and makeshift camps, the urgency for peace has never been greater, as leaders weigh whether this proposal marks a turning point or another missed chance.
