Accidental firing at Governor’s residence in Zhob injures five

Published on: September 26, 2025 3:35 PM

An accidental shooting by a police officer at Balochistan Governor Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail’s private residence in Zhob injured five people. The incident took place at “Janan House” while over 100 college students had gathered to meet the governor. According to police, the officer unintentionally discharged his rifle while handling a jammed bullet. The bullets hit three students and two fellow officers.

Police stated the injured students were from Government Boys Degree College Zhob. They were rushed to Zhob Civil Hospital immediately after the incident. Hospital officials confirmed that the students underwent surgery and are now in stable condition. The two injured police officers had minor wounds and were discharged after receiving first aid. Thankfully, the injuries were not life-threatening.

SP Shaukat Mehmood, the district police chief, confirmed that the weapon was accidentally fired due to a technical mishandling. SHO Muhammad Ayub Mandokhail explained that the rifle went off when the officer’s finger slipped on the trigger while trying to clear a jam. The rifle was on burst mode, causing multiple rounds to fire instantly. The barrel was aimed at the ground, which helped reduce the damage.

Authorities have detained the officer responsible and launched a full investigation. Officials are treating it as a case of accidental firing, not deliberate action. The governor’s security team is also reviewing its protocols to prevent such incidents in the future. The quick response from police and medical staff helped avoid a larger tragedy.

Governor Jaffar Mandokhail expressed deep regret over the incident. He visited the injured students in the hospital and promised to cover all medical expenses. He called the event “highly unfortunate” and assured full support to the victims. Additionally, the governor ordered immediate re-training of all security personnel and regular checks on weapons to ensure safety at official residences.
