Pakistan, Syria agree to deepen economic cooperation

Published on: September 25, 2025 9:31 PM

Pakistan and Syria have agreed to strengthen cooperation in trade, agriculture, and technology to support mutual growth and development. During a meeting in Islamabad, Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain and Syrian Ambassador Dr. Ramez Alraee discussed ways to deepen ties. Hussain highlighted the historical, cultural, and religious connections between the two nations. He stressed that this shared foundation could lead to more meaningful collaboration across multiple sectors. Both sides expressed a strong desire to build long-term partnerships.

The meeting focused heavily on agriculture, food security, and modern farming practices. Minister Hussain said Pakistan was ready to share its experience and technology with Syria. He mentioned that an existing MoU on agricultural cooperation had already opened doors for joint research and development. According to him, Pakistan could help Syria with water management, capacity building, and value-added agricultural products. He added that once sanctions on Syria are lifted, trade could grow rapidly.

To fast-track progress, Pakistan proposed forming a Joint Working Group (JWG) on agriculture and trade. This group would explore practical ways to boost cooperation. It would also help design strategies for food security and improved farming methods. Both countries agreed that a formal mechanism like the JWG would bring better results. Syria welcomed the idea and showed strong interest in moving forward quickly.

Ambassador Alraee praised Pakistan’s ongoing support and commitment to the partnership. He assured that Syria was fully ready to work with Pakistan on all agreed areas. He also emphasized the importance of collaboration in science and technology. The ambassador said that Syria values its friendship with Pakistan and looks forward to stronger ties. He thanked Pakistan for its willingness to share expertise and resources.

In conclusion, both countries agreed to build on their friendship and expand cooperation. Minister Hussain reaffirmed Pakistan’s dedication to helping Syria through expertise and shared projects. He said these efforts would benefit both nations and their people. The two sides plan to meet again soon to finalize the structure of the Joint Working Group. If successful, the partnership could become a model for regional collaboration in food, trade, and technology.
