Pakistan calls for swift UN move to save Gaza

Published on: September 24, 2025 3:16 PM

Pakistan has called on the United Nations Security Council to take strong action to stop the violence in Gaza. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said, “The time for words has passed; the time for action is now.” He emphasized the need to uphold human dignity, ensure justice, and hold those responsible accountable. Dar also highlighted Pakistan’s support for a two-State solution to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.

The call for action followed the recent High-Level International Conference on Palestine’s future. Dar praised the growing international recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state. Pakistan was one of the first countries to recognize Palestine after its declaration of independence in 1988. He stressed that the global community must keep this momentum with serious commitment to justice and peace for Palestinians.

Dar described Gaza as a “graveyard for humanity” due to the ongoing crisis and immense suffering. He urged for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and the lifting of the blockade to allow humanitarian aid to reach those in need. He also called for ending forced displacement and ensuring the right of return for Palestinian refugees. Furthermore, Dar suggested creating an international protection system for Palestinians.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres opened the debate by describing the situation as one of the darkest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is catastrophic, with civilians trapped and deprived of essentials like food, water, and medicine. Guterres stressed that despite calls for ceasefire and hostage release, international laws are being ignored, worsening the suffering.

Guterres also noted that violence is spreading beyond Gaza into the West Bank and other regions. He condemned Israel’s recent approval of settlement expansion, calling it a violation of international law. The Secretary-General warned that such actions damage the chances of a two-State solution, which remains vital for peace. Both Pakistan and the UN emphasize urgent, decisive steps to end the violence and restore hope for Palestinians.
