Trump demands NATO halt Russian oil first

Published on: September 13, 2025 6:35 PM

US President Donald Trump called on NATO to halt all Russian oil purchases before the US imposes new sanctions. He said he is ready to act but only if every NATO member agrees and stops buying Russian oil. Trump criticized NATO nations for weakening their power by continuing these purchases. He shared his message in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, urging the alliance to unite. He stressed that without this commitment, the US will hold off on new sanctions against Russia.

Trump also proposed that NATO consider imposing heavy tariffs on China. He suggested tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% to pressure China to end its support for Russia. Trump believes China holds strong influence over Russia and that tariffs could break this connection. He said these steps would help end the war between Russia and Ukraine faster. Trump mentioned his recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska to underline his point.

The president expressed frustration over NATO’s actions so far. He called the alliance’s oil purchases from Russia “shocking” and damaging to their negotiating power. Trump warned that if NATO members do not act together, any US sanctions will have little effect. He urged the alliance to act quickly, saying the war could end soon with unity. Otherwise, he said, the efforts would be wasted.

Trump’s statements come amid ongoing fighting in Ukraine and rising tensions between the West, Russia, and China. NATO recently boosted defenses in Eastern Europe after Poland downed drones. Meanwhile, Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine despite global sanctions. Trump’s demands highlight the complexity of international efforts to pressure Russia economically.

Trump called on NATO to stop Russian oil imports and consider tariffs on China. He promised strong US sanctions would follow if NATO united in its approach. The former president warned that without joint action, the war will continue longer. His comments sparked debate on how best to end the conflict. The situation remains tense as countries weigh their next steps.
