Pakistan, Iraq strengthen ties to stop illegal travel

Published on: September 12, 2025 3:43 PM

Pakistan and Iraq have agreed to boost cooperation to curb illegal border crossings and enhance security. Following Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s directives, a high-level Iraqi delegation visited the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Headquarters in Islamabad to discuss improved border management. The visit aimed to create a stronger partnership under the “Rights-Based Border Management” project, which seeks to prevent unlawful travel and enhance regional security measures between both countries.

Moreover, FIA Additional Director General Jan Mohammad warmly welcomed the Iraqi delegation upon arrival. Officials briefed the visitors on FIA’s mandate, operations, and its significant role in tackling border-related crimes. They explained that FIA Immigration Control also plays an essential role in combating cyber crimes across Pakistan. This meeting marked an important step toward greater collaboration, ensuring both countries can respond effectively to cross-border challenges.

Additionally, the delegation received a detailed presentation about FIA’s specialized units and their work. They were informed about the Risk Analysis Unit, which uses intelligence-based risk management to monitor and address potential threats. The delegation also learned about FIA’s forensic laboratory, which contributes to the investigation of complex cases, and the FIA Academy’s role in training skilled personnel for future border security operations.

Furthermore, the Iraqi delegation visited Islamabad International Airport to observe Pakistan’s latest border control systems. They were given a comprehensive briefing on second-line border control measures designed to detect illegal travel attempts more effectively. These systems demonstrated Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing its border management processes and ensuring that both nations benefit from shared knowledge and advanced technology.

Finally, the head of the Iraqi delegation expressed gratitude for the warm reception and productive discussions. Both countries agreed to deepen their partnership and continue cooperation on border security matters. The delegation also praised the International Centre for Migration Policy Development for its valuable role in sharing expertise and strengthening processes, reinforcing the importance of international collaboration to address migration and security challenges.
