Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday announced a special compensation package for people affected by floods. Families of those who lost their lives will receive Rs1 million each, while those whose houses were completely destroyed will be given Rs1 million along with a newly built room.
The announcement was made during her visit to the flood relief camp at Jalalpur Pirwala, where she also inspected protective embankments. Maryam Nawaz further declared that a permanent embankment will be built in Jalalpur Pirwala and ordered close monitoring of evacuation operations. She also announced the Gilani Expressway project for Uch Sharif to improve connectivity in the flood-hit areas.
Under the package, victims whose entire houses collapsed will receive Rs1 million, while those who lost a room will be given Rs500,000. In addition, families who lost livestock will also be compensated—Rs500,000 for large animals and Rs50,000 for small animals.
Speaking to the affected people, Maryam Nawaz said she was personally visiting to share their pain and assured them that every promise she made would be fulfilled. “A human life cannot be replaced, but we will do everything possible for the families of those who lost loved ones,” she said, adding that flood-affected people should not consider themselves alone in this crisis.
The chief minister emphasized that the victims were “guests of the government” until the water recedes and full rehabilitation takes place. She said efforts are being made to rescue everyone trapped and rebuild all damaged homes. Expressing sympathy, she added, “We cannot bring back those who have died, but we stand firmly with their families and will try to ease their suffering.”
