Israel strikes in Qatar: Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya killed in air raid

Published on: September 9, 2025 6:31 PM

In a rare and bold move, Israel launched an airstrike in Qatar’s capital Doha, targeting senior Hamas leaders. Witnesses in the Katara district reported hearing at least six loud explosions. They also saw smoke rising into the sky after the blasts. Israeli military later confirmed it carried out the strike, saying it targeted Hamas leadership hiding in Doha. This marks the first known Israeli air operation on Qatari soil.

According to Israeli sources, the strike killed senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya. He was a key political figure and one of the group’s top negotiators. Israeli media claimed the attack targeted a meeting of Hamas officials involved in regional talks. The strike took place as Hamas continues to operate its political wing from Doha. Israel has not commented on how the operation was carried out.

The Qatari government has not yet issued an official statement about the attack. However, the silence has sparked speculation and diplomatic tension. Qatar has long hosted Hamas’s exiled leadership and acted as a mediator in Gaza-related ceasefires. This strike may strain Qatar-Israel relations and complicate ongoing regional diplomacy. International observers are urging restraint on all sides.

The strike raises major security and legal questions. Israel has expanded its military actions beyond Gaza and Lebanon into a neutral Arab country. Analysts say this sets a dangerous precedent. It could lead to increased instability in the region. Human rights groups have also raised concerns about the legality of the attack under international law.

Despite the risk, Israel appears committed to its goal of dismantling Hamas leadership. The attack in Doha shows a new phase in Israel’s military strategy. Regional powers, including Egypt and Turkey, may now be pressured to react. Meanwhile, tension continues to grow as more details emerge about the strike and its wider impact.
