In a historic first, Brigadier General Shariful M Khan, a Bangladeshi-born Muslim officer, has been appointed Director of Staff for the Pentagon’s Golden Dome initiative, America’s version of the Iron Dome. His appointment marks a remarkable milestone in diversity within the US defence system, as he now leads one of the nation’s most critical missile defence projects safeguarding both homeland and allied territories.
In this prestigious role, Brig Gen Khan will direct strategy, policies, and partnerships with industry leaders, universities, national laboratories, and government agencies. The program aims to develop and deploy next-generation missile defence systems that can respond effectively to emerging global threats. His leadership is expected to bring new energy and vision to this crucial initiative.
A graduate of the US Air Force Academy in 1997, Brig Gen Khan has a long and distinguished career in space systems, satellite operations, and national reconnaissance. He has commanded elite units including the 379th Space Range Squadron and the 310th Space Wing at Colorado’s Schriever Space Force Base, where he led nearly 1,500 personnel with distinction.
Moreover, Khan’s operational experience extends to international deployments. He twice served in the Middle East, including the 2007 Operation Silent Sentry, while also holding senior roles at the Pentagon, US Space Force, and the Office of the Secretary of Defence. His exposure to diverse missions strengthens his ability to lead a program of such global significance.
His exceptional service has been recognised with top military honours, including the Legion of Merit, the Defence Meritorious Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. These awards highlight his dedication and excellence across multiple commands and critical missions.
The US Air Force praised Khan’s appointment, noting that American Airmen have continuously excelled in their mission to “fly, fight, and win.” His leadership of the Golden Dome project is seen as part of the Air Force’s broader commitment to innovate, accelerate, and thrive in the defence of the nation.
