Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) announced a major oil and gas discovery at its Dhok Sultan-03 well in Attock district, Punjab, marking a significant milestone in the country’s energy sector.
The company, operating the Dhok Sultan Block with a 75% working interest alongside its joint venture partner GHPL holding 25%, confirmed the discovery in a filing at the Pakistan Stock Exchange. This is PPL’s second successful find in the block.
Drilled to a depth of 5,815 meters, Dhok Sultan-03 targeted naturally fractured carbonates in the Patala and Lockhart formations. Geological and geophysical evaluations indicated promising hydrocarbon zones, validated by wireline log interpretations during testing.
During flow tests, the well produced 1,469 barrels per day of oil and 2.56 million cubic feet per day of gas at 1,147 psig pressure on a 32/64” choke, increasing to 2,113 barrels per day of oil and 4.13 million cubic feet per day of gas at 813 psig on a 48/64” choke.
PPL stated that the discovery highlights the vast untapped hydrocarbon potential of the Potwar–Kohat sub-basin. Advanced technologies in drilling and evaluation can unlock these resources, boosting local energy production and reducing reliance on imports.
Officials said this achievement will enhance indigenous hydrocarbon reserves, potentially saving significant foreign exchange while supporting Pakistan’s energy security. PPL emphasized that ongoing exploration could bring further discoveries in the region.
