Pat Cummins set to shine in Ashes, says Australia selectors

Published on: September 2, 2025 3:50 PM

Australia remains hopeful that captain Pat Cummins will be fit for the Ashes series starting in November. Cummins has been managing a lumbar bone stress injury since July. The injury caused him to miss recent white-ball matches against the West Indies and South Africa. Cricket Australia said he still has lower back pain. However, no exact return date has been set yet.

Selector chairman George Bailey expressed confidence Cummins will play the first Ashes Test in Perth on November 21. He said there is plenty of time for recovery. Bailey also added that even without recent match practice, Cummins’s experience will help the team. The selectors trust his skill and leadership. Cummins remains a key player for Australia’s bowling attack.

Cummins will miss the white-ball series against New Zealand and India starting October 1. This is a big loss for Australia’s limited-overs teams. Despite this, the team is preparing well for the Ashes. Cummins played a vital role in the last Ashes series in England. He took 18 wickets as captain and helped secure a 2-2 draw.

Australia won the 2021-22 Ashes series at home with a 4-0 sweep. Cummins was the top wicket-taker with 21 wickets at an average of 18. His fitness will be crucial for defending the Ashes trophy. The team is eager to have him back at full strength. Fans and experts alike are watching his recovery closely.

In summary, Cummins’s injury is serious but manageable with proper rest and treatment. Australia remains optimistic he will return in time for the Ashes. His leadership and skill are vital for Australia’s success. The team hopes he will lead them to another victory this November. Meanwhile, Cummins will focus on recovery and regaining fitness.
