Flour prices have risen sharply across Pakistan over the past week. The price of a 20-kilogram flour bag increased by up to 300 rupees in many cities. Karachi residents face the steepest rise, with flour now costing up to 2,100 rupees per 20 kg bag. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, cities like Karachi, Larkana, and Khuzdar saw a 300-rupee hike in flour prices. Meanwhile, Hyderabad and Sukkur experienced a 280-rupee increase.
In other regions, the price for a 20 kg flour bag rose by 210 rupees in Quetta. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Bannu, and Multan also saw increases of around 200 rupees. In the capital, the price reached 2,000 rupees per bag. Prices in Lahore jumped by 120 rupees to reach 1,720 rupees, and in Sargodha, they rose by 160 rupees. Other cities like Bahawalpur and Gujranwala witnessed increases between 83 and 166 rupees.
The rising prices have put pressure on consumers nationwide, especially in major urban centers. Experts say the price surge is due to rising wheat costs and supply chain issues. Last week, Punjab’s government took steps to control prices by releasing wheat from government reserves. They also proposed fixing the price of wheat at 2,900 rupees per 40 kilograms for the public sector.
The government hopes these measures will ease inflation and stabilize the market. However, with demand high and supply tight, prices may stay elevated in the short term. Consumers are urged to stay informed and report any unfair practices by sellers.
The flour price hike adds to growing concerns about food security and inflation in Pakistan. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and promise further interventions if needed. Meanwhile, citizens brace for continued increases in everyday essentials.
