The government plans to power Gwadar Port using solar energy to improve its efficiency. Maritime Affairs Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced this initiative on Wednesday. The move aims to reduce reliance on external energy sources and make the port self-sufficient.
A special sub-committee has been formed to plan and implement solar power systems. It will design solar panel installations, battery storage, and power distribution systems. The sub-committee includes officials from various ministries, Gwadar Port Authority, and other key agencies.
The plan calls for micro solar grids across the port, powering critical infrastructure like water pumps and the desalination plant. The solar setup will also support Gwadar’s free zone factories and the international airport. The minister said the initiative will be fully functional soon.
Besides cutting costs, solar power could save Gwadar’s fishing industry over one million dollars annually. Minister Chaudhry emphasized that solar energy is key to protecting local livelihoods and boosting exports. The maritime ministry is working closely with other departments to solve power and water shortages.
This project is part of wider efforts to enhance Gwadar Port’s role as a regional hub. Earlier, agreements with Chinese firms aimed to increase investments and launch new shipping lines. The government also seeks private sector support to route more cargo through the port.
