Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for urgent revival of Pakistan’s cotton industry on Friday. He highlighted the sector’s sharp decline from 14 million bales to just 4 million in recent years. He also emphasized the potential of livestock to boost the economy. The Prime Minister spoke during a ceremony for 300 students leaving for China to join an agricultural training program.
He stressed that agriculture is the backbone of Pakistan’s economy and must be modernized. He said investments in agriculture directly strengthen the nation’s economy. The training program aims to upgrade farming skills by exposing students to advanced techniques in China. These students will act as “ambassadors of Pakistan” to bring knowledge back home.
Prime Minister Shehbaz praised the first batch of students who recently returned from China. He noted their success in applying modern research and farming methods learned in Xi’an province. The new group includes students from all provinces, with 10% reserved for Balochistan to ensure inclusivity. Their departure is scheduled for August 24.
During the event, Chinese Ambassador Xian Zaidong presented a cheque for flood relief aid. He praised Pakistan’s efforts to stabilize its economy and highlighted youth training as a key to growth. Ambassador Zaidong affirmed China’s commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development.
The Prime Minister also acknowledged Pakistan’s recent economic improvements, including macroeconomic stability and 3.5% GDP growth. He thanked all involved in the training program, especially Pakistan’s Ambassador to China, Khalil Hashmi, who received a special memento.
