Karachi continues to face a severe electricity crisis after recent heavy rainfall, as many neighborhoods remain without power even two days later. Citizens in several localities are enduring extreme difficulties because of long outages, which have disrupted daily routines, created health concerns, and increased frustration across the city. The prolonged breakdown has raised serious questions about the efficiency of power restoration efforts in Pakistan’s largest metropolis.
Areas still experiencing outages include North Nazimabad Block A, Gulistan-e-Jauhar Block 9, Nanak Wara, Yousuf Goth, and Ramswami. Residents of Malir Saudabad, Khudaki Basti, Ibrahim Hyderi, Shanti Nagar, Stadium Road, Keamari, and Azam Basti also continue to suffer. With no electricity for two consecutive days, families face severe water shortages, difficulties in communication, and unbearable conditions during hot and humid weather.
K-Electric, the city’s sole power supplier, had earlier claimed that more than 94 percent of Karachi had regained electricity. However, ground realities paint a completely different picture, as many citizens report otherwise. The gap between official claims and the lived experiences of residents has increased anger, with demands for urgent and transparent accountability in power restoration operations.
K-Electric Chief Executive Officer Moonis Alvi defended the company’s efforts by saying that by Tuesday evening, most areas were restored despite major challenges. He pointed out that the field staff worked tirelessly under dangerous conditions and faced serious mobility issues during the heavy downpour. However, citizens argue that these explanations are insufficient as outages continue for extended periods in multiple localities.
Alvi explained that the city recorded rainfall ranging between 130 and 170 millimeters, which severely affected the power distribution system. He insisted that workers were deployed round-the-clock but could not immediately access certain locations due to flooding. Despite these explanations, many Karachiites remain unconvinced and continue demanding rapid solutions to avoid similar breakdowns in the future.
The ongoing crisis highlights the city’s fragile infrastructure and lack of preparedness for monsoon rains. Karachi residents are calling for long-term investments in power management and drainage systems to prevent repeated failures. Without concrete measures, every spell of heavy rain risks pushing the city into darkness, leaving citizens to suffer from preventable hardships.
