Islamabad’s District and Sessions Court gave police a three-day physical remand for nine PTI protesters arrested during recent demonstrations. At the same time, the court sent seven female PTI activists to jail on judicial remand. The detainees appeared before Duty Magistrate Shaista Kundi, who heard the police’s request for extended custody.
Police asked for a seven-day remand to investigate further, but the court approved three days for the men. Meanwhile, the seven women were placed under judicial custody. The court noted that cases against the protesters are registered at Lohari Police Station. The decision came amid rising political tensions.
The protesters’ defense lawyers claimed their clients were peaceful and no evidence linked them to violence. They argued that the arrests are politically motivated and that no roadblocks or harm occurred during the protest. Despite these claims, the court allowed the police custody and jail orders to proceed.
These arrests followed PTI’s nationwide protest campaign after former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s imprisonment. Several PTI leaders, including Rehana Dar, were detained. Police also arrested over 80 party workers in major cities like Karachi and Lahore as protests intensified.
Imran Khan has been jailed since August 2023 on corruption charges and faces terrorism-related cases linked to May 9, 2023 events. His imprisonment continues to fuel political unrest and protests across Pakistan, leading to police crackdowns on PTI supporters.
