Punjab cabinet approves lifetime pensions and key reforms

Published on: August 5, 2025 4:39 PM

The Punjab cabinet approved lifetime pensions for widows of government employees in its 28th meeting. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz chaired the session and led key decisions. This move aims to provide financial security for families of deceased government workers. The cabinet also announced Rs50,000 rewards for rescue workers who served during recent floods. These incentives recognize their dedication and encourage continued support during emergencies.

In education, the cabinet approved official exams for 5th and 8th-grade students across Punjab. Fifth-grade students will take assessments, while eighth graders will face formal exams. This decision strengthens the province’s commitment to standardized education and student evaluation. Along with this, the cabinet endorsed online applications for establishing petrol pumps. This step will simplify processes and encourage investment in fuel infrastructure.

Chief Minister Nawaz ordered setting up formal industries in prisons for inmates. Prisoners working in these industries will receive wages for their labor. This initiative promotes rehabilitation and skill development among prisoners. Meanwhile, the cabinet approved a hiring policy for university vice-chancellors requiring a minimum of 80% marks. This policy aims to raise educational leadership standards across Punjab.

Furthermore, the cabinet agreed to allocate Rs2.6 billion from the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) fund. These funds will support flood relief efforts and help affected communities recover quickly. The decision demonstrates the government’s focus on disaster management and timely aid distribution. It also strengthens the province’s readiness for future natural disasters.

Overall, the Punjab cabinet took significant steps to support widows, improve education, boost infrastructure, and assist flood victims. These decisions reflect a balanced approach to governance with a focus on social welfare. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized efficiency, transparency, and progress in all sectors during the meeting. The government aims to ensure better services and a safer environment for all Punjab residents.
