The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has declared 37 villages across eight districts as calamity-hit due to recent flood destruction. The notification, issued Thursday by the Home Department, outlines the severe human and infrastructure losses in these areas. Affected districts include Gilgit (9 villages), Diamer (12), Ghizer (5), Skardu (4), Ghanche (2), Shigar (3), and one village each in Nagar and Kharmang.
According to the notification, these areas suffered extensive damage to homes, crops, and public infrastructure. The government used its authority to officially classify them as disaster zones. Floods caused by cloudbursts and heavy rains have taken a serious toll since July 20. At least 10 people have lost their lives, and 12 others are missing. More than 20 vehicles, including some belonging to tourists, were swept away.
The government has estimated the financial losses between Rs15 to Rs20 billion. In response, it has announced that individuals who built illegally on riverbanks or encroached waterways will not receive compensation. Authorities have pledged to introduce legislation to prevent future encroachments and reduce flood risk.
Prime Minister of Pakistan is expected to visit Gilgit-Baltistan on August 4, following a request from the Chief Minister. During this visit, the premier is likely to announce a special relief and financial aid package for affected communities. Officials hope this support will assist in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
Meanwhile, the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority (GBDMA) reported a cloudburst in Ghizer’s Ishkoman Valley just a day ago. The resulting flood destroyed dozens of homes, shops, and even a power station. Eight different locations in Faizabad and Dadabad villages were hit. In total, 22 homes and 18 shops were completely destroyed, 42 partially damaged, and 65 more flooded. Farmlands, orchards, and forests also suffered massive losses, alongside schools, workshops, and religious sites.
