Skardu: After being closed for a week due to severe flooding, the Babusar-Naran Highway has reopened for one-way traffic. The Gilgit-Baltistan government, however, urges travelers to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel on this still-sensitive route.
Faizullah Firaq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, confirmed the reopening and said rescue teams have intensified search operations along the highway. Around 15 tourists, including a female TV anchor and her family, remain missing after being swept away by powerful floodwaters near Babusar Pass.
In a related incident, 10 people lost their lives in the Chilas Thak Nala area due to flash floods. The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan expressed deep sorrow for the victims’ families and directed authorities to speed up rescue and recovery efforts to find missing persons.
The heavy rains and subsequent floods hit Diamer district about a week ago, triggering widespread destruction. Floodwaters swept away vehicles and stranded numerous travelers, causing casualties and displacements.
Officials continue emergency operations and have advised the public to avoid unnecessary trips until the area stabilizes. Efforts are underway to fully restore the highway and ensure safe passage for tourists and locals.
