Islamabad’s Capital Development Authority (CDA) plans to introduce electric tram buses to improve public transport in the city. CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa led the meeting that focused on bringing modern and eco-friendly transit solutions. The trams will run on busy routes and feature multiple compartments for more passengers. They will also be designed to be accessible for women and differently-abled individuals.
The CDA is completing a feasibility study covering financial and operational models for the tram project. The initiative builds on the success of the electric bus service, which carries over 90,000 passengers daily. Chairman Randhawa stressed the importance of a self-sustaining financial plan and encouraged exploring public-private partnerships to support the project. Clear timelines and goals for launching the tram service were also set.
In addition to trams, the CDA is upgrading 140 existing bus stops and planning over 200 new ones across Islamabad. These stops will feature digital boards for schedules, advertisements, and safety messages to improve passenger experience and generate additional revenue. A smart ticketing system and in-bus advertisements are part of the plan to enhance income and service efficiency.
The meeting also highlighted the introduction of electric feeder buses on high-traffic routes, identified through passenger data analysis. Modern digital screens will be installed at terminals to keep commuters informed. Furthermore, some electric buses will be reserved for CDA staff to promote the city’s commitment to green transport.
CDA officials expressed confidence that these efforts will transform Islamabad’s public transport. They aim to make the city cleaner, smarter, and more attractive while boosting mobility and sustainability. The project signals a major step toward modernizing Islamabad’s infrastructure for the benefit of all its residents.
