NDMA sounds larm as monsoon floods, landslides threaten Pakistan

Published on: July 23, 2025 4:24 PM

ISLAMABAD – The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent alert warning of floods and landslides due to continuous heavy monsoon rains across Pakistan. The advisory, valid until July 25, highlights rising risks in northern and central regions. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed the NDMA to coordinate with provinces and speed up relief efforts to protect lives and property.

The NDMA cautioned about potential landslides and Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs) in areas such as Hunza, Booni, Reshun, and Ishkoman. Rivers including the Indus, Chenab, Jhelum, and Kabul are also seeing rapidly increasing water levels. Flash floods are likely in Swat, Panjkora, and rivers in Gilgit-Baltistan, with more rain expected in KP and Balochistan’s hilly regions.

Tragically, 11 more deaths were reported on Tuesday, pushing the monsoon death toll to 242. Heavy rains claimed lives in KP and GB, with Swat, Bajaur, and Kohistan worst affected. In Swat alone, six people died, including four children. A woman was swept away by floodwaters in Khawazkhela, while flood-related fatalities were also reported in Astore, Chilas, and Buner.

The rains have triggered widespread damage, washing away bridges, roads, and irrigation systems. The Karakoram Highway and Babusar Top remain blocked by landslides. Around 250 tourists stranded on Babusar Highway were rescued by the Diamer administration, police, army, and Rescue 1122. However, search operations are still underway for 10 to 15 missing people.

Meanwhile, Lahore experienced record-breaking monsoon rain, which caused major urban flooding. Over 100 mm of rain fell in several areas, disrupting traffic and daily life. Roads, underpasses, and low-lying zones were submerged in water. Similarly, Karachi reported light drizzle across the city, and hot, humid conditions continued in Balochistan with temperatures reaching up to 46°C in Nokundi.

Looking ahead, the Pakistan Meteorological Department warns that weather conditions may worsen. Alerts remain in place for floods, GLOFs, and landslides in vulnerable areas like Chitral, Kohistan, and Neelum Valley. Authorities urge citizens to avoid travel to mountainous regions, stay alert, and follow safety guidelines as monsoon rains continue this week.
