The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a high alert as monsoon rains continue across the province. The fourth spell of rain, expected to last until July 25, is forecast to be stronger than previous ones. Authorities have warned of urban flooding and rising river levels, urging residents in low-lying areas to remain cautious.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), rain and thunderstorms with strong winds are expected across southern Punjab, Sindh, eastern Balochistan, and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and AJK. In Punjab, major cities and districts including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Gujranwala, Sargodha, Multan, and Bahawalpur are likely to receive heavy showers.
The PDMA confirmed low-level flooding in the Indus River at Tarbela, Kala Bagh, and Chashma, with flood control operations underway. Section 144 has been imposed along rivers and canals, and police have been directed to increase patrolling in flood-prone areas. Local administrations and emergency teams are on high alert.
Drainage efforts have been intensified in vulnerable districts. WASA, Rescue 1122, and municipal teams have been instructed to keep machinery, disposal stations, and staff on standby at all choke points. The PDMA has also asked deputy commissioners to stay in the field and monitor the situation round the clock.
The ongoing monsoon has already proven deadly. Since June 25, at least 123 people have died and 462 others have been injured in rain-related incidents across Punjab. In the last 48 hours alone, 71 fatalities were reported due to urban flooding and building collapses. Authorities continue to urge the public to take precautions during this intense spell.
