The recent spell of monsoon rains in Punjab has turned deadly, as 135 people have lost their lives in weather-related incidents. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority released these figures on Sunday.
The PDMA reported that 479 citizens also suffered injuries due to incidents such as roof collapses, lightning strikes, electrocutions, and drownings. Additionally, around 156 houses have been damaged throughout the province.
Although no rain fell during the past 24 hours, officials warn that the fourth spell of monsoon showers is expected to begin Sunday evening. Urban flooding is likely in several major cities.
Authorities highlighted Lahore, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, and Sialkot as high-risk zones. As a result, emergency response teams have been directed to remain on standby with full preparedness.
Water levels in rivers and barrages across Punjab remain normal for now. However, swimming in rivers, canals, and drains has been completely prohibited to prevent further casualties.
Moreover, the Indus River is experiencing moderate flooding at Tarbela, Chashma, and Taunsa. The PDMA assured that they have taken precautionary measures and will continue monitoring the situation closely.
