The Punjab Assembly has temporarily stopped further actions against suspended opposition members. This came after productive talks between Speaker Malik Ahmed Khan and opposition leaders. The Speaker directed the assembly secretariat and ruling party members to halt all proceedings against the suspended lawmakers until negotiations conclude.
The suspended opposition members had faced hefty fines exceeding 20 million rupees for alleged vandalism in the assembly. However, the recovery of these fines and deductions from members’ salaries have now been put on hold. This pause prevents further financial penalties against the opposition during the ongoing dialogue.
Furthermore, the government has suspended plans to remove nine more opposition chairmen through no-confidence motions. Despite this, four opposition chairmen have already been ousted from their posts. Sources say the move aims to reduce political tensions and foster a more cooperative environment in the assembly.
This temporary halt creates an opportunity for both sides to resolve conflicts through discussion. Lawmakers hope this will restore order and allow the Punjab Assembly to focus on governance and legislative work in the near future.
The Speaker and opposition members have expressed optimism that ongoing talks will lead to mutual understanding and strengthen democratic processes in Punjab.
