The spillways of Terbela Dam have been opened due to a sharp rise in water levels. This step was taken to release extra water from the reservoir. According to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the move is essential to prevent overflow and protect the dam’s structure. The opening follows heavy monsoon rains that increased inflow into the dam. Water levels are now approaching the maximum safe limit.
As a result, the flow in the Indus River is expected to increase significantly. PDMA has warned that water discharge may rise between 260,000 to 270,000 cusecs. This could cause flooding in low-lying areas near the river. The authority has issued a flood alert and asked the public to remain cautious. Rising water levels are expected to continue over the next few days.
PDMA has directed district administrations to stay alert and take safety measures. They must warn local residents and keep emergency plans ready. Fishermen, farmers, and those living close to the river are urged to move to safe places. People should avoid unnecessary travel to riversides. Rescue teams have also been advised to remain on standby.
This alert follows similar warnings issued at Rawal Dam and Hub Dam, which also reached high levels recently. Continuous rainfall has raised concerns of flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Punjab. Authorities are keeping a close eye on the situation. They have assured that the water release is under control and being monitored carefully.
Meanwhile, citizens are advised to follow updates from local officials. They should not ignore evacuation calls if issued. By working together, both communities and officials can reduce risk and stay safe. Early action and public awareness are key to avoiding major damage in such weather situations.
