PM directs overhaul of PNSC to create global-standard shipping giant

Published on: July 10, 2025 7:03 PM

ISLAMABAD – July 10, 2025: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered the preparation of a comprehensive strategy to transform the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC) into a world-class, internationally competitive shipping company, as part of the government’s broader goal to revitalize Pakistan’s maritime sector.

Chairing a key meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister reviewed the current status of the PNSC, including its fleet capacity, operational challenges, and future expansion goals. He highlighted the immense untapped investment potential in the country’s shipping industry and stressed the need for reforms, restructuring, and modernization of the national shipping line.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that private sector engagement must be encouraged to fuel growth in the maritime space. He instructed officials to design a robust, investment-friendly roadmap that includes incentives for new entrants and foreign partners. “The increase in the number of cargo vessels and efficient utilization of local resources can lead to significant foreign exchange savings,” he said.

To enhance competitiveness, the Prime Minister called for the use of PNSC vessels for domestic cargo movement under a transparent, market-based model, reducing reliance on foreign carriers. He also directed authorities to engage sector experts and global consultants to assist in upgrading PNSC operations to international shipping standards.

Officials briefed the meeting on the corporation’s existing fleet, current cargo volumes handled through Pakistani ports, and ongoing regional trade routes. The session also discussed future expansion, fleet renewal, and seafarer training programs. Federal Ministers Ahsan Iqbal and Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, along with senior maritime and finance officials, were present during the meeting.
