LAHORE – July 10, 2025: A powerful 8-hour rain spell dropped 136 millimeters of rain in Lahore on Thursday, causing widespread urban flooding, damage to homes, and the death of two people, including a young girl.
According to local media, heavy downpours severely affected areas including Nishtar Town, Iqbal Town, Samanabad, Gulberg, Johar Town, and several others. Major roads were submerged, and traffic came to a standstill. Commuters were seen pushing stranded cars and motorcycles through deep water.
In P&T Colony, a wall of the LOS drain collapsed, flooding homes with sewage water and damaging household belongings. Residents pleaded for help from authorities but received little response. Meanwhile, Jinnah Hospital also faced challenges, with rainwater flooding entrances and leaking ceilings in multiple wards, making access difficult for patients and attendants.
Despite the rain stopping by evening, many areas remained waterlogged. Streets near historical landmarks such as Shalimar Gardens resembled ponds, while Major Jameel Road remained underwater. The Punjab Met Department has warned of more rainfall in the coming days.
While citizens complained of slow drainage, Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin claimed that water was cleared from major roads within an hour. He compared Lahore’s response to that of New York and India, stating, “We cleared main roads in 1–2 hours, unlike cities where it takes over 20.” He also mentioned that 13 underground water tanks are being constructed to prevent future urban flooding.
