Speaker files reference to de-seat 26 Sunni Ittehad Council MPAs

Published on: July 3, 2025 5:45 PM

Speaker Punjab Assembly Malik Ahmad Khan has filed a reference against 26 MPAs from the Sunni Ittehad Council. He submitted the reference to the Election Commission in Islamabad. These MPAs belong to the opposition in the Punjab Assembly. The Speaker accused them of disorder and misbehavior during a recent session. This move could lead to their disqualification from the assembly.

Earlier, on June 27, a heated session took place in the Punjab Assembly. Opposition members created noise, chaos, and damaged property. Due to this behavior, the Speaker suspended the membership of the 26 MPAs. He announced on June 28 that a reference would be sent against them. He said their conduct was against assembly rules.

After that, the Punjab Assembly Secretariat prepared the required documents. These included previous court rulings and legal references. Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan and Secretary General Aamir Habib went to Islamabad. They took all documents needed to file the reference. They aimed to take firm legal action.

Sources confirmed that a court ruling by former Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial was also included. That ruling involved a case against Hamza Shahbaz. The Speaker believes this ruling supports his case. It shows how legal action can be taken against misconduct. This strengthens the argument for disqualifying the 26 MPAs.

This development has added tension in Punjab’s political scene. It could change the strength of the opposition in the Assembly. If the reference succeeds, the opposition will lose key members. This could help the government pass new laws more easily. The Election Commission will now review and decide on the matter.
