The Ministry of Maritime Affairs announced a strategic plan on Tuesday to expand Gwadar Port’s operational capacity. The plan includes introducing new shipping routes and launching a ferry service connecting Pakistan directly with Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Federal Minister Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry revealed these initiatives during a high-level meeting held in Islamabad.
Chaudhry emphasized that this move is part of a broader government strategy to position Gwadar as a key transshipment and logistics hub in the Arabian Sea. With Gwadar Port now fully operational, the government aims to increase its integration into global maritime networks to boost trade with Central Asia and the Middle East, reduce congestion at Pakistan’s other ports, and improve cargo handling efficiency.
The newly proposed shipping lines will facilitate smoother and faster movement of goods, strengthening Pakistan’s role in regional trade corridors. Additionally, the ferry service will offer an affordable and reliable transport option for both passengers and cargo traveling between Pakistan and GCC countries. This service is expected to support expatriate communities, enhance trade opportunities, and encourage tourism, benefiting the local economy of Balochistan.
To ensure success, Chaudhry highlighted the importance of upgrading port infrastructure and involving the private sector in key areas such as ship servicing, hospitality, and transportation. The Maritime Ministry is actively engaging with shipping companies, port operators, and maritime authorities to finalize the technical, legal, and logistical framework for these projects.
Overall, the government’s plan demonstrates a strong commitment to fully utilizing Gwadar Port’s strategic potential as a regional maritime gateway and a catalyst for economic growth in Pakistan and beyond.
