Monsoon alert: Karachi, Hyderabad face urban flood threat

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a nationwide alert for heavy monsoon rains and potential flooding from June 30 to July 5, 2025. The warning highlights that Karachi, Hyderabad, Badin, and Thatta will likely experience intense rainfall between July 2 and 5, with a high risk of urban flooding due to heavy downpours overwhelming drainage systems.

Besides these southern cities, the NDMA forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall in northern and central regions, including Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, Potohar Plateau, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Balakot, Murree, and Galiyat. These areas face the threat of landslides and flooding in rivers and streams due to water overflow.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the cities of Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Kohat, Swat, Chitral, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, and Mardan are also vulnerable to urban flooding and increased water flow in the Kabul and Swat rivers. Punjab provinces, including Lahore and Rawalpindi, are expected to receive heavy monsoon showers, adding to the overall risk of flooding.

NDMA Chairman Lieutenant Inam Haider cautioned that climate change has led to above-average rainfall patterns in Pakistan, particularly in the north where melting glaciers compound the threat of floods. He emphasized that people should avoid water channels and riverbanks during heavy rainfalls and remain alert to sudden rises in water levels.

He further assured that NDMA is actively monitoring the situation with fully operational emergency centers and has the ability to forecast such events 6 to 8 months in advance to facilitate timely preparedness and response efforts.

Citizens are advised to follow official guidelines, prepare for possible disruptions, and stay updated through weather reports and NDMA advisories.
