Karachi braces for more drizzle after days of heavy rainfall

KARACHI – After two days of heavy downpours, Karachi is expected to see light rain and cloudy skies today, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. The weather system that earlier caused significant rainfall has now weakened, reducing the chances of further intense showers.

Today’s maximum temperature is expected to reach 32°C, slightly higher than yesterday’s 30°C. However, humidity levels between 65% and 85% will make it feel 6°C to 8°C warmer than the actual temperature, increasing discomfort for residents.

While the rainfall intensity has dropped, drizzle may continue into tomorrow. Meteorologists also forecast partly to fully cloudy skies in the coming days as the current system lingers over the region. Light showers could still affect several areas of the city intermittently.

In the last 24 hours, Surjani Town recorded the highest rainfall at 58.2mm, followed by Saadi Town with 47.5mm, and Gulshan-e-Maymar and Gulshan-e-Hadeed with 37mm each. Other areas, including Shahrae Faisal, Jinnah Terminal, North Karachi, and Defence, received between 24mm and 32mm of rain.

Saturday’s heavy monsoon rains led to urban flooding across multiple localities in Karachi, causing severe traffic disruptions. Areas such as Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town, and North Karachi remained waterlogged, with commuters struggling through submerged roads and open manholes.

Overflowing drains at Iqbal Plaza in North Karachi and Defence Morr added to the chaos, while sanitation concerns rose due to sewage spills. Major roads like Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Rashid Minhas Road, and Sharae Faisal were heavily affected, with vehicles stranded and traffic at a near standstill for hours.
