Iran’s foreign minister warns U.S.: Respect is key to negotiations

Published on: June 28, 2025 12:27 PM

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, has issued a strong and clear message to U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the ongoing efforts to negotiate with Iran. In a detailed statement shared via social media, Araqchi emphasized that the tone and language used by the U.S. administration play a crucial role in shaping the future of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

He pointed out that if Trump is genuinely interested in reaching a deal with Iran, he must abandon any rude, disrespectful, or insulting remarks directed at Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Khamenei. Araghchi warned that such disrespectful language not only undermines diplomatic efforts but also damages Iran’s dignity and sovereignty. He stressed that Iran expects the U.S. to approach negotiations with mutual respect and understanding, rather than with hostility and threats.

The Iranian Foreign Minister further explained that Iran’s stance is rooted in its core principles of honesty, truthfulness, and respect for its independence. He reaffirmed that Iran values its sovereignty and will never allow external powers to dictate its internal affairs or decide its future. According to Araghchi, Iran’s principled position is that any meaningful agreement must be based on mutual respect and recognition of Iran’s national dignity.

He also highlighted the regional security context, mentioning that Israel’s threats and the missile program are part of a broader strategic environment. Araghchi suggested that Israel’s approach to Iran’s missile capabilities has compelled some nations, including the U.S., to seek closer cooperation with Israel in order to counter Iran’s military strength. He implied that Iran’s missile program is a response to regional security concerns and is vital for Iran’s defense against external threats.

Furthermore, Araghchi indicated that Iran remains open to diplomatic engagement but only under conditions of mutual respect and recognition. He cautioned that continued insults and threats from the U.S. could damage prospects for any future negotiations and might lead to increased tensions rather than de-escalation.

Overall, his message underscores Iran’s unwavering stance on sovereignty and dignity, calling for respectful dialogue as the foundation for any successful negotiations. The statement reflects Iran’s readiness to defend its rights and principles while seeking constructive diplomatic solutions, provided the U.S. approaches with sincerity and respect.
